Shamble Coffee Brewers / Melbourne CBD

Melbourne CBD coffee options are constantly evolving. Once upon a time, there were the odd breakfast locations, like Hardware Societe or White Mojo, which had amazing coffee but were often so busy it was impossible to get a speedy takeaway. Recently however, there has been a rise in “coffee only” cafes around town. They are often quite small, and generally only operate Monday to Friday, offering little more than pastries and sweets. But their coffee is spectacular, and the people brewing the coffee have a real passion for their craft and the people that come in on a regular basis. Every street you walk down, you’re bound to find some of these cafes springing up. Having changed roles, and moving from the Lonsdale Street side of town to the Collins Street end, it’s opened up a world of opportunity in terms of these smaller coffee joints. Wandering up Little Collins Street, I came across a cafe. Not that I knew what it was called, only seeing a generic “Coffee” sign. Inside, the Spartan concrete flooring …

Bluestone Lane Coffee / Bryant Park

For when you’re craving a proper Australian coffee in the heart of NYC meet Bluestone Lane. New York does a lot of things well, but espresso coffee has not been one of them. Hot, burnt, bitter, under and over extracted, scorched and mostly milk are just some of the ways you could describe the coffee we’ve tried here. Oh and if you don’t want it in a giant cup (let’s face it, it’s a coffee milkshake) you’re out of luck, seriously the smallest size at Starbucks is a ‘tall’ and it is indeed tall. Cue Bluestone Lane, where you can get a Melbourne magic or even a proper flat white. We opted for the magic, a perfectly microfoamed dash of milk in an extra strong coffee that brings back all the Melbourne coffee feels. Bluestone Lane have a few locations around the city, a sign that New Yorkers have fallen in love with Australian coffee. Why not, when there’s a so much to love about our brews! Be sure to hit the follow button to keep …

Market Lane Melbourne: For the Love of COFFEE

If you’ve read even a single post from frenchtoastandindiepop you’ll know we love coffee. Love may not even be enough to describe how we feel about coffee. We live it and breathe it and for all we’ve consumed over the years we’re probably made of it now too. That’s why after leaving Doughboys we were completely incapable of walking past Market Lane. Coffee is a love we share with many, and when you find a cafe that understand this obsessive and all consuming infatuation, you can’t help but feel at home. Coffee is what Market Lane do, it’s the only thing they do, and everything about the space they occupy is crafted to showcase this love. They don’t just want you to drink their coffee, they want you take it home and be able to savour it in your own time and will provide you with all the tools you need to do so. Best of all Market Lane give you the opportunity to sit behind the baristas and watch them at their craft. The …

Architects and Heroes

Welcome to Architects and Heroes, the long awaited venture from the guys (and girls) behind Maven Espresso. You’ll find them in an awesome space on Rokeby Road in Subiaco. It’s obvious they’ve taken great care in putting it all together and it all feels fully formed, right down to the amazing art on the walls. Above all else though, Architects and Heroes is about a love of specialty coffee. Like the recently opened Addison and Steele, you’ll find evidence of this love wherever you look. We didn’t have much time to spend on our visit, so we opted for a quick white coffee. The latte art was beautiful, and the coffee itself was rich and sophisticated. Like Maven, they also use Code Black beans, bringing the flair of Melbourne coffee to little ole Perth. If you’re looking for specialty coffee, from people as passionate about it as you are, look no further then Architects and Heroes! We will be back to sample more coffee, their filter and syphon were calling to us but would require …

Coffee Q&A with the Perth Coffee Project

Originally posted on perth·coffee·project:
This week {perth·coffee·project} launches a new feature which examines the most important factor in Perth’s specialty coffee scene: you. We chat to every-day-coffee-drinkers about their love of coffee and reveal their deepest, darkest caffeinated secrets. First up is Zahra of frenchtoastandindiepop, a local food blogger who loves a good coffee.  ? Hey Zahra, can you remember your first coffee? Tell us a story! On one of my first few days at university, I was intrigued by this amazing drink that keeps you up at night. I ventured to try this ‘coffee’ for myself. I chose the university food hall (not a smart move) and ordered a flat white in nervous anticipation. The first sip burnt my tongue and the only thing I could taste was an overwhelming bitterness. I proceeded to empty about three sugar sachets into the darkness before trying again. It was now both horribly bitter and sickeningly sweet. “Isn’t it supposed to taste good?!” I asked despairingly. Lucky for me, both my taste and the coffees I have consumed since that fateful day have markedly…

Gooseberries in Suburbia

In a quiet location opposite Kensington Primary school you’ll find Gooseberries Cafe. It’s recently had a revamp with new owners and a new look. Its inside is a mix of edgy wood, and clean surfaces, with colourful art adorning the walls of what must have been someone’s home at some stage. We collected a menu from the counter and found a seat opposite this piece. We found the cafe surprisingly spacious despite its small outer appearance. After ordering from the friendly staff, our drinks arrived quickly and breakfast soon followed. First up was an ice coffee, at $6 it was quite expensive, there being no cheaper option to not include the ice cream. We felt that it probably needed an extra shot, but the coffee itself was a nice flavour. The latte however was good, creamy and strong without being bitter or over extracted. Though temperature wise it was a fraction too hot for our liking. We ordered Arby’s pancakes, and added home made blueberry coulis for an extra $3. The pancakes were amazing, big …

Rose Deli East Perth

We stumbled upon the just opened Rose Deli on Royal st and were keen to check it out. The interior is in beautiful tones of pale pink and light tan wood. There’s roses on every table and pink cups and crockery to match. It’s a light and pretty atmosphere to dine in. The coffee at Rose Deli is really refreshing. They offer a takeaway cup to have dine in with an extra shot, which we decided to take advantage of. We haven’t tasted a bean like this recently, it was beautiful with a rich and smooth flavour. The latte art was pretty spot on too. The barista was happy to tell us it was a rubra bean, and her face lit up when she discussed it, just what you want for your morning ritual. There’s a small menu of things to choose from, with extra specials on the wall. They have three different types of museli, needless to say we were excited, and ended up with two items from the specials board. We got carried …

Maylands: The Eighth Avenue Strip

There’s no doubt about it, Maylands is becoming quite an urban hotspot. You’ll find boutiques, cafés, an art gallery, a delicatessen, even a butcher, bakery and small bar. Eighth Avenue now boasts everything a foodie could want in one convenient location. So you’re in Maylands for breakfast – where to go? Highlighted Meal The Bacon Stack You’ll find this gem at Milk’d, a veritable mountain of bacon, rocket, gooey poached eggs AND tomato, all on buttered, salty toast. It’s one of those meals that just works, and something you’ll find yourself coming back to try, again and again and again. Milk’d Milk’d is the old reliable of cafés on the strip. They serve good food and good coffee fast and with a smile, though without some of the refinement and flair of Mrs S or Chapels. They are a great family-friendly venue and have plenty of room; we’re especially fond of their airy outside tables. Plus, they happen to serve the bacon stack, which we absolutely adore. Mrs S Mrs S is located on the …
