On the miserable and wet grand final day we made our way to Food for Me in Vic Park with friends for a meal. Funnily enough they had a ‘thing’ on and so were closing at 12, but there was still plenty of time for some pre football feasting! Not having been inside we found the cafe surprisingly spacious and seated ourselves before heading back to the counter to order. We found our coffee decent, it had a good strength and was creamy. Nothing outstanding but passable. We started the meal with a breaky sambo. This was definitely a man sized meal, loaded with bacon and egg, and avocado smear and salad. It had everything you’d expect, and tasted as it looks, but even with the egg and bacon still felt a bit like a lunchtime meal. Next up was the scrambled eggs with danish feta and sundried tomato to which we added avocado. The eggs were probably a touch underdone and the highlight of the dish was definitely the feta. The Imp, Vic Park

A local favourite, the Imp is well known for their great coffee and food, and their narrow little store on Albany Highway. The cafe is all wood and sleek lines with a rustic edge. They play good tunes in a cool but somehow still welcoming location. The coffee here was enjoyable, a nice flavour and creamy but without that knockout punch of a really good brew. Our first dish was the heuvos rancheros. We love a good Mexican breakfast and this didn’t disappoint. It had a nice kick to it and a real creaminess from the feta and guacamole. It’s hard to go wrong with eggs, tortillas, beans, feta and guacamole! Lucky for us they offered french toast with a berry coulis and maple syrup, we added bacon, just because… Bacon. The coulis was wonderful, fresh and flavourful, it made the maple syrup completely unnecessary. The toast was thick with a soft centre and a nice flavour, it would have gone well with an added creamy element, a mascarpone or chantilly just to cut through …

The Sassy Cookie: Breakfast on High

Just for something different for breakfast, we decided to try out the Sassy Cookie in Vic Park. This is a very well known teahouse for their high teas, but they also offer breakfast on high, the combination of breakfast and tiny things with tea was something we had to try. The shop front is colour to the max, lots of wonderful things wherever you looked, we had to walk around to the back however for our breakfast. This cute little tea house looks and feels just as you would expect, it was dainty and had a really homely atmosphere. The ceramics were stunning, lots of different cups and saucers around, in dainty pinks, blues and purples. We were seated, served with orange juice and selected our pot of tea each, the first being complimentary within the $25 price. Cheap Eats: Crumpet, Vic Park

We are rather fond of crumpets, and upon happening upon ‘Crumpet’ in Vic Park on a weekend wander we couldn’t resist giving their little cafe a try. Located on Albany highway the cafe itself is quite non descript, but we found their crumpet laden menu interesting and the prices cheap so we headed to the counter to make our selections. Inspired by the wonderful @idrinkmilkshakes of Instagram fame, we decided to share a vanilla milkshake. The staff were happy for us to share, providing glasses and the serving size was so big we doubt a single person could have finished it alone. The milkshake itself was frothy, thick and creamy, just what we wanted. For the $5/$6 (we can’t quite recall which) we were pretty impressed. We hadn’t been sure what to order, and everything being so cheap we ended up selecting three dishes to share. Harvest Espresso: Spring Menu 2014

Harvest Espresso is one of my favourites, their cafe may be tiny but their flavours always hit hard. As always when they release a new menu we were quick to visit and check it out. We started with coffees, we haven’t always enjoyed theirs but this was the best we’d had from them. They were creamy, balanced and with a bold flavour hit. Now onto to the really good stuff, the food! As usual we decided to try a sweet and a savory option. There’s only one sweet dish on the menu but there’s quite a few savory to choose from. First up was the baked pineapple slice, the signature sweet dish of the spring menu. It came with lemongrass foam, yuzu pearls, a pineapple gel and fried quinoa. The slice was moist, sweet and nicely flavoured with pineapple and almond. My favourite part of the dish though was the gel, it was sweet and tart and had such a lovely texture. The Sparrows Nest, Vic Park

The Sparrows Nest is a new addition to Albany Highway and the vibrant Victoria Park cafe scene. They’ve got a really cute vibe going, and the puppy drinking bowl was a very nice touch. The decor inside is all just a little bit eclectic and interesting, matched by the good taste in music, we’ll let you check the name of the blog if you’d like to know what genre that happens to be… Unusually you can see through to the kitchen at the back so if you like you’ll be able to sit and watch them create your meal for you. Orders are placed at the counter and you’ll have to grab a menu for yourself too. We started with yahava coffees. We found them to have a nice flavour and they were creamy but a bit too hot. We did discover that they make a creme brûlée coffee on their Instagram page after we left, which is frankly intriguing so we may just have to return to try it. The Sparrows Nest offer a …

Sixteen Ounces Revisit

After our last visit and with a few more fly by takeaway coffees, we thought a revisit was in order after learning that Sixteen Ounces have a new menu, and new french toast. The cafe retains the same friendly staff and awesome fit out, but no Andrew Embley this time unfortunately. The coffee was once again rich, and a lovely temperature. We took another home with us when we left, the coffee here is definitely reached the flavour and consistency necessary to pass the Second Coffee test! Our first meal was the baked potato hash, presented beautifully in its own skillet. The dish had a lovely rich tomato flavour and the egg was well cooked. There was toast provided but no butter and it seemed like it may have been done in a press, something to keep an eye on as it can ruin the lightness and consistency of the bread. Zucchero Espresso in Vic Park

We love frequenting vic park, there’s so much life, so much food, and the coffee scene has just exploded. We came to Zucchero because we were given good advice that their French toast was amazing, and we’ve passed it on so many occasions it’s become a crime to walk past once again without visiting. The decor is a vibrant mix of modern sleekness with frequent reference that you are in fact dining at Zucherros. If you didn’t notice it on the street there’s no chance you’ll miss it when you’re inside. We seated ourselves in the main dining area, it’s welcoming but there’s a bit of a feeling of overload with the decor. The best way I can describe it is with the old adage about accessorizing (stay with me here males), put on everything you want to wear and then take off the last item to make it perfect. Sixteen Ounces Vic Park

We stopped by Sixteen Ounces on Albany highway in Vic Park on a leisurely Monday morning. This lovely little cafe had only been open for 9-10 weeks, but it has that comfortable feeling of a place that’s been around for so much longer. The fit out is just great. The cafe is a little rough around the edges, with some exposed red brick and a mix of wood and concrete. The white walls are adorned with some pretty fantastic things, our favourites were the stag heads but art like this door also took our fancy! The fit out is made all the more impressive by the discovery that the owners put it all together themselves, right down to the impressive wooden shelving and benches. Sixteen Ounces is just the kind of cafe we like to frequent. Ordering coffee here you have a selection of a blend or single origin, it’s not surprising that we went for single origin lattes. Our coffee was full bodied and rich, with a lovely flavour. Next up came the food. …

Harvest Espresso: 2014 Winter menu

Harvest Espresso is the one of the few cafés where a change of menu makes us anxious, nay desperate to taste it at the first possible opportunity. With such amazing dishes on their summer and autumn menus, our expectations were high. We made our way over there on an early Wednesday morning, a brief interlude to the unfortunate realities of being a student at this time of year. The tiny cafe was bustling with activity and wonderful smells and a welcoming warmth greeted us as we opened the door. The chilly weather outside required hot beverages ASAP, and after taking in the menu, we ordered our usual lattes and much anticipated meals at the counter. Our coffee was nice, a touch over extracted but a good temperature with no attempt at latte art. It did the job of warming us from the inside out, and defrosting our chilled fingers. Our first dish to the table was winter vegetables. We always like the chance to taste a good vegetarian option, and this fit the bill. The …
